Never Eat Sugar When You are Hungry
70In America, it is very common for children to go home and eat candies/cakes when they arrive from school. There is always a supply.
This is the one thing I have never allowed my son to do and I had to train him again and again and watch him like a hawk until the thought/habit was instilled in him. Occasionally he would, but he recovers from it.
I suspect that along with obesity this is one of the reasons there is such a large segment of the population with insulin independent diabetes, however no long term study has been conducted to validate this hypothesis.
Glucose is a small molecule that freely passes the blood brain barrier. When we feel hungry, it is literally the brain saying "feed me". The tendency to grab a candy bar in response to hunger is exactly a response to that.
When table sugar [sucrose] is ingested in any form, it is cleaved into glucose and fructose. The fructose is converted to glucose.
There is an immediate increase in blood sugar and the body responds by producing insulin to take up the extra glucose from the blood. This the body's mechanism to prevent prolonged exposure of hemoglobin to the extra sugar in the blood, as this would cause glycosylation of terminal peptides in the hemoglobin molecules effectively impairing its main function, to bind oxygen.
Repeated production of insulin in response to increased sugar level "down-regulates" the insulin receptors. This means they do not respond as well to the normal insulin level. What this means is that the body is forced to make more insulin to get the same effect.
Because it is not due to the body not producing enough insulin, rather the unresponsiveness of the the receptors to insulin, it is called non insulin dependent diabetes.
The key to alleviate hunger before any meal is to take something with lots of fiber. I do not recommend eating fruits either as they have fructose.
I recommend eating something like a carrot or a piece of meat or something with protein. A glass of milk is much, much better, or a boiled egg. You will alleviate the hunger and that will buy enough time for a proper meal. Or a toast would do.
A caveat. Eating something with a sugar substitute is no healthier and a worse alternative, in my opinion.

because its not heathy
As far as I am concerned sugar is poison!
I'm trying to eliminate sugar completely. I'm using honey right now in my espresso. I know- I shouldn't have espresso- I have to have some vice. This is a great hub. Thanks for working on this!
Very true that sugary things are not good to alleviate hunger. In fact after the spike in blood sugar the blood sugar falls and actually creates more hunger. Good carbs and protein are much better and keep the blood sugar in better balance. Good hub.
Msorensson, Very Good Hub! You have presented some vital information that is very helpful! Healthy eating is really important! Excellent job! Thank you for sharing, Peace & Blessings!
once again you are educating me,thank you.there is a lot of valuable info here that i will make a point of remembering.....
Don't forget, thyroid hormone controls all of our bodies other hormonal activity.A lack of enough thyroid hormone can cause a host of metabolic problems including diabetes.
Weight gain due to slow metabalism. Insulin is a hormone that be lower than normal due to low thyroid hormone.
Testoserone and estogen are the sex hormones.
Then there's seritonin that makes us feel good also and meletonin in the skin that also has a role in our overall health.I'm sure there are others that I'm missing, but then you can always google the word hormones to find out for yourself.
Treating the symptoms of disease is not stopping the disease, just managing it.Hopefully we can do better than that.
Good for educating me. Sugar is good for the body but it’s also a poison for the body. The idea is to learn when to have it and when not to have it.
Thank you for your good hub.
msorensson. Hi. This is a great hub with wonderful information. I do love sweets, but try and limit my intake. When my grandchildren arrive home from school, they are only allowed fruit before their dinner, which I believe to be a good thing. Thank you for sharing. :) :)
msorensson, this Hub was of particular interest to me. Diabetes runs in my mother's family. I thought I'd add this one to my FB. :)
Wow I knew about this from you thanks for sharing this Ma'm!
This is a very good hub. I think if people really knew what they were doing, they would make better choices. It is a battle with my kids every day when it comes to snacking. I try really hard, but it is difficult especially when they are hungry!
Best, GPAGE
Hi, this is really interesting, this is the first time that I have ever read the real reason behind the way sugar can cause diabetes. The videos, and the explaination. Great stuff. rated up, purely because You explained it so well, and I learned something new! lol I love knowledge, I suck it up like a sponge!! LOL cheers nell
This is a great nutritional hub Melinda - so many people fill up on sugar and the splurge of diabetes is devastating - thanks for alerting us.
Great HUB! i never have sugar around, not drinks or food, unless fruit. It is my opinion that sugar is very bad for the human body and it makes me especially sad to learn that children eat so much sugar, NOT my two girls. One is a vegeterian as am I and the other is borderline, chemical free and sugar free. The earth has such and amazing variety of wonderful and healthy fruits. My kids LOVE fruit! Thanks and Peace :)
Excellent Hub and I learned a lot from it. Thanks so much for putting this information together in such an accessible way.
Love and peace
Tony
Loved reading this hub, very well written and it's oh so true on the sugar thing...
Well written full of information, good hub.
I'm one of those guilty persona who eats sweets or candies even when I'm hungry because of the busy work schedule. It's good that I'm not yet diabetic. But your hub just reminded me not to abuse it. Thank you. Have a great week!
Voted this useful. I'm a diabetic and I'm open to reading good articles that teach me how to manage my condition. Educating myself along this ailment is now my preoccupation. I blog about my struggles and I appreciate articles like this one. I consider seriously the information the videos offer, too. Thank you.
Thank you so much Melinda, for this hub on sugar, because I have type 2 diabetes and trying to teach my childrene and grandchildren the right things about eating to much sugar. Thank you for sharing. Godspeed.creativeone59
Good thing I don't eat sweet things, well other than a bit of chocolate here and there Melinda.
Great info. If I eat a small portion of fish, meat, or other high protein food when I'm hungry, my hunger quickly dissipates.
I came back to add:
I'm eating only about 20 grams of carbs on most days now, and I feel much better! I'm losing weight and have more energy. The only problem is that now I have trouble sleeping.
This is excellent! I have a friend who fights this disease - will email to him.
oh my you did a good job here learned so much. i did a lot of reviews about supplement and all of them are natural weight loss that derived from plants and fruit and this is good also in stabilizing glucose. i remember every time a eat so much sugary food i noticed a sudden change in behavior i became hyper talked a lot and moved a lot its no good! LOL
im your fan!
Such smart advice and how awful that we have allowed ourselves to offer mass-produced sugar 'snacks' to our children. We no longer think of a piece of fruit or a boiled egg as a snack. It is junk-food - and our children are suffering.
Great tips - as I am getting hungry and my first thought was to reach for something sweet to tide me over - instead I had some water and I am getting ready to dice some tofu (protein as you suggest) and make a quick noodle soup - and relax a bit.
Rated up. Always great to come to your hubs.
Finally, I've found somebody who puts this topic up.
Thanks much. I've learned a lot from it :)
Anyway, can I link this hub to my facebook page?
Its an awesome hub and I love the choice of your topic. Keep it up..
Interestingly, while I had a major penchant for sweets as a kid, as an adult I can take them or leave them. When I'm looking for a snack, I'm looking for meat. Go figure. )
Sugar seems to be so addictive, and I think this is a great hub! I think it is wise to grab a glass of milk or a hard boiled egg too. That seems much wiser and healthier for the body. Thank you for sharing this, it may really help people to avoid diabetes and help their health overall.
Oh, Melinda, this is one of my seven sins – I tend to grab a chocolate whenever I feel hungry at work. Just to find myself half an hour later flat, dizzy, tired and sometimes terribly sick until I’ve rescued myself with some protein. One of my New Years resolutions is not to do this. I’ve stocked my offices with protein-enriched cereals and dried meat (biltong). Proteins keep me strong and brisk for hours. When I really want sugar, I’ve decided to eat a banana. This works for me... if I can only resist the temptation to buy a chocolate when the lady-with-the-sweets comes around. Melinda, I appreciated this informative and encouraging hub of yours tremendously. Take care!
Yes you right , this wrong habitat of eating sugar may lead to increase the risk of diabetes and increasing body weight .
You have to control your appetite!
Great hub! Thanks for the info. I do have the bad habit of eating just anything - a lot of times, ice cream - when I go hungry. From hereon, I will stay away from sweets when I am starving. Thanks again!
You did it well,I will take your advice.
Oh, boy. Now I am scared to eat sugar. How much is too much? Luckily, I was raised not to eat too much sugar.
This is a really great, and thought provocking, hub.
Good sound advice, thank you!
It isn't only children who have a high sugar intake. It's also most adults. VERY unhealthy !!!
I know I feel absolutely rubbish sometimes after eating something sugary on an empty stomach, for the next few hours. Can't think straight, light-headed and giddy. Sometimes I feel fine, but it's not worth the risk. But this Hub has helped me to understand the mechanisms better, and because of that I'm less likely to risk it. I'll go for an oatcake instead of a sweet biscuit. Very informative thank you. Up, useful, interesting.
That is truly useful information. I did know a little about this but sometimes it is hard to fight the "candy hungry"
Very useful article. I am from a family with diabetes history. Thanks for sharing
A very informative hub. I love sweets and I eat it anytime. I bring with me dried fruits to keep me from starving as sometimes I eat past the time. Your advices are a real help, I must be paying attention. Thank you. Very useful, informative and interesting. Cheers msorensson.
